What is the immediate thing one does when police arrest you?
Stay calm, do not resist arrest. Ask why you are being arrested and where there is any offence, Do not make statements before understanding the charge. Contact a lawyer or trusted person. You must be taken to court within 48 hours.
Additionally, when you are arrested, ask to speak to your next of kin, or lawyer, and or personal doctor where the victim has health issues that require medical attention.

My relative has been in police for days without court, what can we do?
Go to the police station and ask about the case. Speak to the OC or CID officer. Report to a State Attorney or court. You can apply for unconditional release if the suspect has been at police for more 48 hours.

I have been given a court date, but I don’t have a lawyer
You can represent yourself. Go early and speak to the court clerk or duty lawyer. Ask for an adjournment if needed.

I want bail, what do I need?
You need sureties, Introductory letters of both sureties and for the accused by Local Area Council 1, a national ID, passport photos, and proof you will return to court. Explain to court that you have a fixed home within the court’s Jurisdiction, sole breadwinner if you are indeed a sole bread winner in your, sole caretaker where you have children, in cases of health, one can also raise that they require adequate medical attention.
